Along the embankment of the Volga river there are many old houses, churches, an art museum, and a history museum (17, Volzhskaya emb., phone: (4852) 30-41-75, opened: 10.00-17.00 ex. wed).Yaroslavl Historic-Architectural Museum-Reserve, founded in 1895, possesses rich collections (more than 250,000 exhibits). There are expositions of Ancient Russian Paintings (the 1st half of the 16th century), luxurious cloths (the end of the 16th century beginning of the 20th century). There is a vast collection of church-plates of precious metals (works of Russian jewellers of 14-20th centuries) Of the most interest is the exposition of “Lay of Igor's Host”, open since 1980.
The Yaroslavl History, Architecture and Art Museum-Preserve (Bogoyavlenskaya sq., 25, tel.: (4852) 303869) established in1895 has enormous collections of great historical and artistic value. The museum visitors will see exhibitions of ancient Russian painting, expensive drapery, articles of church utensils made of precious metals. The history and nature of the Yaroslavl region are also represented there. There is a special exhibition devoted to "The Lay of Igor's Host", a XII century Russian literary work of genius.
TheYaroslavl Art Museum (Volzhskaya emb., 23, Tel.: (4852) 304831) has an excellent collection of Russian painting. In 1977 it won the title of the "Best Museum of the Year" among provincial Russian museums. The museum collection of ancient art possesses famous icons of the Yaroslavl school: "The Savior" (XIII century), "Virgin of Tolg" (1314), "the Deesis" (XV century). The best of Yaroslavl tiles are also presented here. The collection of Russian painting boasts the canvases of K. Korovin, most valuable and most interesting in the country. The museum also features a collection of Yaroslavl portraits of the first half of the XIX century, and a collection of porcelain and glassware of the XVII-XX centuries.
The Literature-Memorial Museum-Reserve of N.A.Nekrasov “Karabikha” is located in the estate of a great Russian poet in the old settlement of Karabikha. The estate in Karabikha is a beautiful architectural ensemble in the classical style well-preserved by now. One of the attractions of the museum is the park.
